The Ribbon at Glass City Metropark – A Year-Round Recreational Haven
Efficient Maintenance of The Ribbon’s Chiller System at Glass City Metropark
Metroparks Toledo sought to transform an old industrial area into a vibrant, year-round outdoor attraction. The Ribbon, a 1,000-foot-long trail, needed to seamlessly transition from a summer roller track to a winter ice rink, independent of weather conditions.
CHALLENGE
The task was to maintain a complex cooling system for The Ribbon, ensuring its functionality for both roller skating and ice skating activities despite the temperature fluctuations.

Campbell Mechanical, experts in sustaining mechanical systems, was tasked with the upkeep of The Ribbon’s intricate chiller system. Comprised of a 14-mile-long network of refrigerant-circulating tubes, Campbell Mechanical ensures this unique feature operates smoothly. The meticulous process of layering and painting the ice is part of the routine, demonstrating Campbell’s adaptability to various maintenance projects.
OUTCOME
The Glass City Metropark, featuring The Ribbon, has seen over 200,000 visitors in just three months. Anticipation grows for its first full winter season in the fall of 2023. As part of the expansive Glass City Riverwalk project, The Ribbon is set to be a cornerstone in revitalizing the waterfront.
